The Bike Brighton Sub-Committee will host a Ride of Silence community bike ride beginning at 7 p.m. on May 15. The Ride of Silence is a worldwide bike ride that honors those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
Registration for the Brighton Ride of Silence begins at 6:30 p.m. at Brighton City Hall (500 S. 4th Ave.) The ride will start at 7 p.m. and end back at City Hall. Cyclists will travel approximately 6.7 miles.
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise awareness that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
Each year, approximately 600 cyclists are killed on public roadways. In 2023, 228 locations participated in the Ride of Silence, representing 40 states, 16 countries and five continents.
