Emergency Management
The Brighton Office of Emergency Management (OEM) provides planning, training, exercises, and educational outreach programs related to natural and man-made disasters to assist and prepare government agencies, citizens, and private/non-profit organizations prior to, during, and after a local emergency or disaster. Brighton Emergency Management also manages the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during any major emergency or disaster and works with IT/AdCom/Police Records for the activation of the emergency outdoor warning system. OEM works as an interagency coordinator in partnership with local, state, federal and private entities to provide comprehensive planning, response, mitigation and recovery capabilities for all hazards potentially facing the City and the Brighton Fire Rescue District.
In addition to working with the city, local and county governments and state and federal partners on plan development, exercising and training, Brighton OEM works closely with citizens, community groups and local businesses to plan and prepare for emergencies and disasters.
Why do residents need to prepare?
- Brighton residents are vulnerable to a number of hazards, including, but not limited to: tornadoes, winter weather, hazardous materials incidents and public health emergencies.
- Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year.
- Disasters have lasting effects, both to people, pets and property.
- Local government, first response agencies and disaster-relief organizations will try to help you, but you need to be prepared to help yourself because local response agencies may not be able to reach you immediately or they may need to focus their efforts somewhere else that is more a priority.
- Residents should be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days (72 hours). This means providing for yourself, family members and others you may want to include in your plan.
Every citizen in this country is part of a national emergency management system that is all about protection - protecting people and property from all types of hazards.
