[ARCHIVED] City of Brighton to observe Drinking Water Week, May 5-11

The City of Brighton joins communities across North America in celebrating Drinking Water Week, an annual observance led by the American Water Works Association. Taking place May 5-11 this year, Drinking Water Week serves to highlight the importance of safe drinking water and recognize the tireless efforts of water professionals who keep it flowing around the clock in our communities.

To celebrate Drinking Water Week, water utilities, water organizations, government entities, environmental advocates, schools, and others throughout North America will help children and consumers of all ages understand how water is protected, cleaned, and delivered throughout their communities. Water utilities and others mark the occasion by hosting engaging events like educational fairs, contests, facility tours, interactive demonstrations and more.

This year's celebration also coincides with a historic milestone – the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in the United States, a landmark law designed to safeguard the public by setting high drinking water quality standards. The SDWA provides a scientific framework to identify potential risks to drinking water and address them in partnership with states and water utilities.

“Safe, reliable drinking water is critical infrastructure, an anchor for our lives, communities and quality of life,” said Emily Meek, assistant director of utilities for the City of Brighton. “Drinking Water Week helps us pause and consider where our water comes from, and what it takes to safeguard this precious resource. The Safe Drinking Water Act has been instrumental in defining and committing to the highest quality tap water that we can provide each and every day. We celebrate the dedication of Brighton's water professionals, from our certified operators, maintenance crews, water analysts, engineers, and communicators who continue to deliver this vital resource to our community.”
