The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the City of Brighton the GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2023 fiscal year. The award represents a significant achievement to the GFOA, reflecting the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
In order to receive the budget award, the City had to satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation, including a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. To receive the award, budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories. In 2023, the City of Brighton overhauled its budget presentation process, moving to a more accessible digital budget book format. This not only makes financial information easier to navigate for our diverse population, but it allows for more detailed information and transparency regarding how the City uses its funds. The new digital budget book can be viewed here.
The City of Brighton has won the distinction every year since it began applying in 2015. Each year, over 1,700 governments receive the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. To learn more about the program and other award winners, click here.
