[ARCHIVED] City to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day with tree plantings, seed swap, more

In honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day, the City of Brighton will be hosting a series of events to promote environmental protection and sustainability, along with the planting and preservation of trees. The community is encouraged to participate in the mix of planned activities.

Tuesday, April 18: Earth Day Celebration Proclamation, Arbor Day Proclamation and Arbor Day Poster Contest Recognition at the City Council meeting (6 p.m. start). City Council will congratulate the winner of the City’s Fifth Grade Arbor Day Poster Contest - Arly Boyer, Bromley East. The City will also celebrate Brighton’s 37 years as an officially designated Tree City U.S.A. by the Arbor Day Foundation. The public is invited to attend at City Hall Council Chambers (500 S. 4th Avenue) or watch online by clicking here.

Friday, April 21: A tree planting and dedication for the City’s first-place winner of the Fifth Grade Arbor Day Poster Contest will take place at 1 p.m. at Bromley East Charter School. Students from the winner's class will all be invited to participate in planting the tree. Mayor Gregory Mills plans to be in attendance to show his appreciation.

Saturday, April 22 (Earth Day): Members of the community are encouraged to bring planting seeds to trade with others from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brighton Recreation Center (555 N. 11th Avenue). Brighton Shares the Harvest and Colorado State University masters horticulture extension will be in attendance to talk about plants. Members of the community can view plots available to rent from the recreation center and talk with a nutritionist about healthy recipes to make with a harvest.

Friday, May 5: This year's Annual High School Beautification Project will take place at 9 a.m. at Carmichael Park (650 E Southern Street). The senior class from Brighton High School will help plant 30 new trees to celebrate Arbor Day.
