Brighton Police investigate fatal crash

The Brighton Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on March 18th at approximately 3:20 a.m., at the intersection of US Highway 85 northbound and E 136th Ave.    

The initial investigation determined a Volkswagen SUV traveling northbound on Hwy 85 drifted off the road and struck a stoplight pole at the intersection of Hwy 85 and E 136th Ave. The male driver was ejected from the vehicle on impact. Responders attempted lifesaving measures on the driver, but he was ultimately pronounced deceased on scene. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 

The initial crash sparked a grass fire in the area. Brighton Fire Rescue responded to the crash and extinguished the grass fire.  

The highway remains closed at the time of this release pending inspection and repair by the Colorado Department of Transportation. 

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending positive identification by the coroner’s office and notification of next of kin.
