At approximately 8:44 a.m., Brighton Police responded to a report of an assault victim in the 200 block of N. 11th Ave. Officers discovered a 72-year-old male deceased from a violent assault. The early stages of the investigation identified the suspect as a family member of the victim. Family members reported that the suspect had been acting erratically. The suspect was driving a silver Honda CRV, and this information was shared with surrounding law enforcement agencies.
At 9:37 a.m., Thornton Police were called to a vehicle crash near 4705 E 168th Ave, which involved the suspect’s vehicle. A passerby who stopped to assist was carjacked at knifepoint by the suspect. The suspect fled the scene in the victim’s Camaro.
Multiple agencies began searching for the stolen vehicle. At 9:40 a.m., an ACSO Deputy spotted the stolen Camaro near E. 160th Ave and Washington St., at a home belonging to another family member of both the victim and suspect. Deputies confronted the suspect, who was armed with a weapon. The suspect fired the weapon at the deputy, and the ACSO deputy returned fire, resulting in the suspect's death.
The Adams County Critical Incident Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and the Adams County Coroner’s Office will release the identities of the victim and suspect.
