The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been activated to investigate a use of force incident involving a Brighton Police officer that resulted in serious bodily injury to a 33-year-old male suspected of assault and domestic violence. The Brighton Police Department is committed to a fair review process to ensure clarity for all involved. The CIRT’s multi-jurisdictional, independent approach ensures an objective and unbiased examination of the facts and evidence surrounding the incident.
On Oct. 28, just before 10:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to BJAA Park near North 12th Avenue and Longs Peak Street for reports of a domestic disturbance involving a male and female. Initial callers reported a verbal argument, which was later described as a physical assault on the female. Dispatch received multiple calls as the situation unfolded.
Upon arrival, officers issued verbal commands to the male, who remained uncooperative. After resisting arrest, he was taken into custody and later determined to have sustained serious injuries. Officers requested medical personnel who responded to the scene and transported him to the hospital for further care.
The Brighton Police Department is fully committed to a thorough and complete investigation and will work in close cooperation with the CIRT and the District Attorney’s Office. We remain focused on community safety and are committed to being as transparent as possible.
The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with investigative protocol. Anyone with additional information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the CIRT at 303-658-4299. For more information about the CIRT, click here.
