Brighton City Council proclaimed October as College Application Month at its October 5 meeting. The proclamation aims to engage college-bound students in thinking about their next academic step, something the Brighton Office of Youth Services aspires to accomplish through its Growing Grads FAFSA nights.
The proclamation comes two weeks before the 2021 Colorado Free Application Days, which begin on Oct. 19 and end on Oct. 21. The Free Application Days is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Higher Education and colleges and universities across the state to waive college application fees for Colorado students.
“October is an important month for high school students who are going to college since many important application deadlines occur this month,” said Tawnya Russell, Manager of Youth Services. “We try to plan important events surrounding these dates to be a stepping stone for college-bound students.”
The City of Brighton’s Growing Grads program will be returning to in-person FAFSA Nights this month. The FAFSA Nights aim to provide students seeking postsecondary education assistance to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). At these sessions, there will be representatives from FAFSA and partnering schools and organizations to assist and answer questions.
The upcoming FAFSA Nights will take place at the following times and locations:
- Oct. 13 at Eagle Ridge Academy, 3551 Southern St. from 6 - 7:30 p.m.
- Oct. 20 at Brighton High School, 270 S. 8th Ave. from 5-7 p.m.
