[ARCHIVED] City Council hires new city attorney

New-City-Attorney-NF

Brighton City Council appointed Alicia R. Calderón as the new City Attorney at the July 20 City Council meeting. Calderón’s first day will be August 23, 2021.

Prior to being hired with the City of Brighton, Calderón worked for the City of Loveland, Colorado as the Deputy City Attorney (June 2018 - present) and Assistant City Attorney (June 2015 - June 2018). There, she acted as the lead attorney on civil litigation, represented the city clerk on open records requests and election issues, provided counsel on water and power utility issues, advised the city on human resource issues, supervised attorneys and more. Starting in 2004, Calderón began working for the Colorado Attorney General’s Office Department of Law, serving as the First Assistant Attorney General (December 2007 - May 2015) and the Assistant Attorney General (November 2004 - December 2007). Prior to working for the state, Calderón worked for the Boulder County Department of Social Services as a caseworker, Newgenesis as the Director of Clinical Services, the Denver Bar Association Volunteer Court Mediation Project as a mediator and the Colorado Legal Services Migrant Farm Worker Division as a law clerk.

Calderón earned a bachelor’s degree from Pomona College in Claremont, California, a master’s degree from the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work and a juris doctor degree from the University of Denver College of Law.

Earlier this year, Brighton City Council conducted a nationwide search for a city attorney. In June, Council interviewed four semi-finalists for the position and selected Calderón. In Calderón’s role as City Attorney, she will be responsible for providing legal oversight on matters affecting the city.
