Help protect your pet from coyote encounters

In light of a recent incident in which a dog was attacked by a coyote in the Crown Homes Subdivision, the City's Community Services Division would like to remind the public the importance of protecting your pets. See guidelines below:

HELP PROTECT YOUR PET FROM COYOTE ENCOUNTERS

WHILE OUT WALKING:

  • Keep your pet on a leash (There is a leash law in the City of Brighton).
  • Walk your pet after sunrise or before sunset.
  • Go for walks in well-trafficked areas.

ON YOUR PROPERTY:

  • DO NOT PURPOSELY FEED THE WILDLIFE.
  • Do not leave your dog outside unsupervised – It only takes a few seconds.
  • Keep cats in the house (Cats cannot be off your property without a leash under the City of Brighton animal laws).
  • Be extra vigilant if there are backyard animals in the neighborhood such as chickens, rabbits or livestock (where allowed).
  • Do not keep pet food outside. Don’t feed your pets outside, be conscious of bird seed that falls to the ground. The seeds can attract coyotes.
  • Securely cover trash cans.
  • Clean your grill after each use.
  • Pick up dog waste daily.
  • Place motion detection lights on your property.
  • Coyote Vests are an option that may help for some dogs.
  • Coyote Rollers can be placed on the top of the privacy fence. There are plans available online for this project.
