National League of Cities President Joe Buscaino has appointed Brighton Youth Council Members Prisylla Arteaga and Gianna Rocha as youth representatives of the National League of Cities (NLC) 2020 Council on Youth, Education, and Families. This council guides and oversees the work of NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. Additionally, the council fosters peer-learning and networking opportunities for elected municipal leaders and youth leaders; stimulates effective leadership on behalf of children, youth and families; and elevates the voices of city and youth leaders in broader discussions of the needs of children, youth and families.

“This shows the strength of the Brighton Youth Commission and how our youth are looked at nationally as a positive example,” Brighton Mayor Greg Mills said. “Congratulations to our youth who were chosen!”

Joining Prisylla and Giana as newly appointed youth members of the council in 2020 are Ashley Shan of Dallas, Texas and Avinash Verma of Austin, Texas.

“Having learned of Prisylla and Giana’s deep commitment to these issues, I am confident that they will make valuable contributions to the work of the council and NLC,” said Institute for Youth, Education, and Families Executive Director Clifford M. Johnson. “Prisylla and Giana will have ample opportunities to share their experiences and learn from other municipal leaders, enriching the council’s discussions while also bringing back new and useful information to Brighton that can inform and enhance the city’s ongoing efforts on behalf of children, youth, and families.”

Serving as this year’s co-chairs of the Council on Youth, Education, and Families are Grand Rapids, Michigan Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and Saint Paul, Minnesota Mayor Melvin Carter. Mayor Frank Scott of Little Rock, Arkansas and Councilmember Eric Guerra of Sacramento have been invited to serve as vice-chairs.
