Student charged with making false threats at BHS

Brighton police have arrested a 17-year-old female for making multiple false reports which caused a lock-down at Brighton High School (BHS) for several hours on April 19 of
this year. The resulting incident caused several area schools to be placed on lock-out status, as well as tying-up emergency responders and causing street closures in the immediate area for approximately four hours; the girl’s name is not being released because she is a juvenile.

School resource officers received an anonymous report just after 11:15 a.m. on April 19, 2019; the report described threatening statements allegedly made by a male party to friends over social media. While this first report was being investigated, a second report came in stating that a student had seen another student in a BHS restroom loading a gun. Information from this second report, while uncorroborated, necessitated an escalation in police response to the
situation, in order to ensure student safety.

After a thorough investigation indicated there was never any real or credible danger to students, a warrant was obtained for the arrest of the juvenile female on charges of making a
false report of explosives, weapons, or harmful substances, a felony, as well as interference with staff, faculty, or students of educational institutions, and harassment, both misdemeanors.

These charges are merely accusations, and the suspect should be presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
