Council approves new Utilities Customer Assistance Program

On Tuesday, the Brighton City Council voted 9 to 0 approving a new Utilities Customer Assistance Program (CAP) that provides qualifying residents with help paying their utility bill during hardships.  CAP will go into effect Wednesday, May 1 and will replace the city’s Good Neighbor Program that was established in 2014.

The city is partnering with Almost Home, Inc. on this new program and utility customers who qualify may receive up to $300 worth of vouchers per year to assist them with paying their utility bill. Utility customers in need of assistance must apply through Almost Home. CAP is only available to City of Brighton residents and all customers will be asked to show proof of residency at the address associated with their utility bill during the application.

“The new CAP is a great way for us to ensure we are putting our customers first, which is just one of the enhancements to our utilities services that we have planned this year,” City Manager Philip Rodriguez said. “I’m eager to have us dedicate additional resources to help those customers who may need assistance with their bills here in Brighton from time to time. I’m also very pleased that we’ll be partnering with Almost Home through the new program, as they have proven their unique ability to provide much needed support to our community. I believe CAP will prove to be a very beneficial program and partnership for our residents.”

The program is made possible through generous donations of other residents who choose to “round up” their monthly bill to the nearest dollar, allowing the extra change to be put into a fund that is used to provide vouchers to customers in need of assistance. These donations will be called Good Neighbor contributions under the new program. Any customer who previously opted in to have their bills rounded up through the previous Good Neighbor Program will automatically be enrolled with that same program under CAP.

Assistance through the CAP program and enrolling in the round up program, will be available beginning May 1. For more information or to see if you qualify for CAP visit www.brightonco.gov/CAP.
