During the 2019 budget preparation process, questions were raised concerning the Utilities Department financial information. The City of Brighton utilities services are funded through an enterprise, which operates within a cost for service model, separate from the city’s general fund. This means these services operate similar to a business and the funding for utilities is accounted for separately from the other activities of the city such as police, parks or streets. Due to the significance of these services for the community, Brighton officials will be analyzing all information related to water, wastewater and storm drainage functions in the coming weeks. This includes seeking an outside independent audit of the Utilities Fund along with an updated review of the city’s rate structure and its impact on our ability to provide these essential services to our community. We anticipate this process to be thorough and comprehensive and we appreciate the community’s continued patience and support.
