Outdoor Warning Sirens

Emergency Warning Sirens

The City of Brighton's Outdoor Emergency Warning System (EWS) is an outdoor siren system that is used to warn the general population of Tornado danger in a short amount of time and to notify them that the emergency is occurring.

Siren Testing:   The City tests the outdoor emergency warning sirens on a monthly basis.

The first Wednesday of every month at 11:00 a.m.
The sirens will sound for 5 minutes.

We do this to ensure that the system is working properly and to ensure that personnel are fully trained in activating the system.  If you hear the sirens at 11:00am on the first Wednesday of the month, please do not call 911.  This is only a test.  You can contact the police directly at (303) 655-2300 or check the Brighton Alert System for information.

Siren Locations:  Brighton currently has 9 sirens located strategically on poles throughout the City to ensure total citywide coverage. EWS may be activated by individual siren, by siren zone, or citywide. The sirens are located at the following addresses:

o    South Outfall Trail Head -526 W. Southern St.

o    Indigo Trails (entrance) -15228 Chambers Road

o    Brighton Police Department -3401 E. Bromley Lane

o    Brighton Recreation Center -555 N.11th. Ave

o    City Water Tank -19594 E.168th Ave.

o    Prairie View High School -12405 E. 120th Ave.

o    238 South 50th Ave.

o    Fire Station #52 - 5 Firehouse Road

o    Brighton High School - 270 S. 8th Ave

The sirens have been placed to produce a 70 decibel noise level over all of the populated areas of the city.  The 70 decibel level is a standard used by FEMA for siren effectiveness.   The sirens produce a 70 decibel noise out to a distance of one mile and a 60 decibel level out to two miles.

What Do the Sirens Mean?

The system uses one siren tone.  When they are activated during an emergency, the sirens will be activated for 3 minutes.

  • Alert: A steady tone to signify an emergency alert. This signal will be used primarily for tornado warnings (not a tornado watch).

If the sirens are activated - and it is not our monthly test - the public should see it as a signal to:

  • Seek shelter (anyone outside should go indoors)
  • Tune into radio, television or Brighton Alert to get information about:
    • Type of Emergency
    • Instructions & Recommendations
  • Wait for the All Clear
The public should not call 9-1-1 unless they have an actual emergency.
