Geographic Information Systems

GIS (Geographic Information System) is a computerized-based mapping and information system that is used by every city department. GIS enables the city to combine and layer large amounts of maps and geographically based information (data), providing new capabilities and information to city departments, citizens, and developers.
The GIS Division's primary focus is to provide GIS and mapping capabilities for mapping city infrastructure assets - streets, water, sewer, and sanitary manholes and lines, and community planning - property parcel information, addressing, zoning, and land use, and parks and open space. To accurately map features the GIS utilizes Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and aerial photo-images to accurately locate and map features across the landscape. The GIS Division utilizes ESRI's ArcView 9.3, ArcIMS 9.1, ArcSDE 9.2, and ArcInfo 9.3 GIS software and maintains layers and data. Currently the division maintains the city's data in an ESRI enterprise geodatabase utilizing SQL RDBMS and ArcSDE.
