The academy consists of a series of eight interactive classes and are offered at no cost to participants. All the Citizens’ Police Academy Instructors are current employees and represent every facet of Brighton Police Department. Our objective is not to train you to be a police officer, but rather to give you an up-close look that will allow you to become an informed citizen. Curriculum will include (subject to change depending on staff availability):
Overview of the Department and Patrol
Telecommunications (911) and Dispatch
Use of Force
Victim Services Unit
School Resource Officer
High Risk Vehicle Stops
Emergency Vehicle Operation
Crime Scene Evidence and Processing
The 2018 academy will begin on September 12th, 2018 and continue for nine weeks up to graduation on November 14th, 2018. All classes will be held at the Brighton Police Department from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brighton Police Department unless advised otherwise. There will be two all day Saturday classes, September 15th, 2018 and September 29th, 2018, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Flatrock Training Facility.
Individuals must be 18 and willing to have a background check conducted. Applicants may not have been convicted for any major criminal offense. Applicants need to be able to attend the majority of the classes.
We are committed to the concept of community oriented policing, which is a collaboration between police and citizens where the police no longer are the sole guardians of law and order. We encourage all members of our community to become active allies in the efforts to enhance the safety and quality of our neighborhoods. We are proud of our successes here in Brighton through partnerships and quality service to our community. Our goal would be that you are able to share that newly acquired knowledge with other citizens in the City.
